STONE HILL WRESTLING
Welcome to Stone Hill Wrestling !
Become part of history by joining the first ever wrestling team to represent our school during the 2016-2017 season!
This team is for students who attend Stone Hill MS. There may be a few experienced wrestlers on the team, but for the most part, our group will be comprised of brand new wrestlers. So it's a fantastic opportunity to join the "world's oldest sport" and determine if it's an activity you'll want to continue at Rock Ridge High School.
Practices begin on November 9 (7-8:30 pm)
If you missed our special kickoff session in October at Rock Ridge, that's not a problem. You can still wrestle this season! You can register anytime (see below) or attend the first two practices as a "free trial" before signing up. This includes the first practice on November 9 and a special welcome/orientation for families and wrestlers on Friday, November 11. You may also attend one of the remaining "Introduction to Wrestling" events prior to the start of the season. See list of remaining locations/times.
The Stone Hill team will be led by Rock Ridge head coach Paul Grinups along with several of his assistant coaches. Paul was Westfield High School's first ever state champion before wrestling at Virginia Tech. In addition to serving as head wrestling coach, he is an assistant coach on the Rock Ridge football team.
The team will practice on Monday and Wednesday nights (7-8:30 pm) in the Rock Ridge High School wrestling room, beginning on November 9. We may also have combined practices with other local teams on the Saturdays in which we don't compete. The season ends around the end of February.
Our team will compete in the new Middle School division of the super popular Dulles Duals. These exciting events are held at Top of the Podium on Saturdays throughout the season. Our new uniforms consist of fight shorts and compression shirts! We will compete as a team and expect most wrestlers to get 10-20 matches over the season. We also intend to participate in one or more meets at local high schools, including Rock Ridge, in conjunction with high school varsity matches.
Wrestlers have the option of competing more frequently during the season. They can register for weekly Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (NVWF) tournaments as well other events (separate fees may apply). The coaching staff will explain all such opportunities once the season begins.
The required equipment needed for wrestling is a headgear and wrestling shoes. If possible, you'll want to attend TOP's "Get Your Gear" Days on November 8 (11am-1pm and 4-7pm) to purchase your equipment. TOP is a local, 501(c)3 nonprofit and prices are usually lower than big box stores. Further, you receive helpful assistance from people who actually know something about wrestling :-)
Similar to other sports, the club will provide each wrestler with a school compression shirt for competition, but wrestlers may need to supply their own fight shorts (coaches will provide more information on this).
To register for the Stone Hill team, you must join a local youth wrestling club. We are proud to affiliate with two local clubs: Eastern Loudoun Wrestling Club and Dulles South Youth Sports. Click on these links for more information about the clubs. If you already belong to a different club, this is not a problem.
